Abstract

The controversy about university autonomy in Brazil has a long history. Since 1968, the ideal of higher education was based upon a university model and the principle of autonomy. In reality, the expansion of the system did not follow the legislation. The system grew and became more diversified. After 1995, with the so-called New Republic, the debate about autonomy restarted. This paper discusses the debate's different positions, defines its main characteristics, and considers possible solutions in today's context.
