Taking the debates promoted by UNESCO (especially the 1998 World Conference) as a starting point, the author discusses the challenges presented to higher education by the present-day society of knowledge and information. Particularly important for the administration of higher education are the themes of pertinence, quality, and intercultural understanding. The self-knowledge brought about by institutional evaluation is important to guide the actions which demand collective effort.
