This text discusses the theoretical and ideological matrix of standardized tests. It mainly criticizes the technological model of evaluation and its effects on education and society. As an instrument of a given view of society, this type of evaluation plays a central role in educational reforms, especially during times of economic and social crises. The National Higher Education Exam (provão) is discussed as a specimen of this general matrix, not from a technical but form an ideological and political perspective. The text also presents some characteristics of an educative evaluation-an evaluation that is committed to the principles of active participation of educational agents in the collective construction of institutions and society.
