The purpose of this text is to discuss specific .reforms that in recent years have been implemented in Brazilian higher education either through direct pressure to adjust to global capitalism, internationalized capital, and the market God, or in tune with these adjustments. In this regard, some of the major contradictions and demands of the higher education system ate examined. The principal measures of this planned or implemtend reform ate identified and discussed; its fundamental characteristics/ categories are questioned, relating them to the changes in production and to the reform of the State. Some of the main challenges of this system, which should be conceived as public, democratic, autonomous, ate presented along with perspectives which can be identified in the structural and conjuctural elements that constitute the reality of the present crisis.
