Abstract

The text shows analyses of the private higher education (college), in particular the branch that is known as "community universities". This group of institutions started to organize itself in the first half of eighties, earning some more pressure power by the time of the elaboration of the Carta Constitucional de 1988 (Constitutional Letter of 1988). With the power of its organization the group creates the Associação Nacional de Universidades Comunitárias - AB RUC (National Association of Community Universities), trying to defend its corporation interests. Under the name of community join it some confessional community universities and non confessional community universities; this heterogeneity shows an ambiguous character and, sometimes, against the segment, reflecting itself under the building process of its own institutional identity.
