The paper discusses the conflicts at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), during the years 1999 and 2000. This event, that shook public opinion in Mexico and Latin America, and did away with the passivity of staff and  faculty, producing profound changes on campus, is here discussed from the vantage point of what was experienced and produced by teachers and researchers. The movement at UNAM also triggered debate among students regarding student politics, university reform and other important issues of university life. What is presented here is a personal view of the author, who was an active participant in these debates. The paper discusses the most important moments of the conflict and tries to situate them in the national debate around changes in higher education, but it also tries to point out the experience which this general movement produced regarding the possibility of initiating profound changes in one of the world's largest universities.
