This paper discusses some of the policies of the Venezuelan state with regard to higher education and its impact in the development of the academic career, with special emphasis on the Programa de Promocion del Investigador (PPI) and Benefício Académico (CONABA). Some conc1usions are presented regarding the perception university professors have of the performance evaluation policies developed by the state, in response to the new demands both actors face. The analysis concludes with a comparison with other Latin-American countries.
