Abstract

This text discusses the configuration of the journal Avaliação, from its conception in 1996 up to the year 2000, on the basis of the political and theoretical conditions which made its emergence and consolidation in the Brazilian and South American scenario possible. For the purpose, the author explored the abstracts which were produced, the categorizations established in accordance with the orientation of the work group, descriptive statistics related to the characteristics of production, besides annotations made during readings of articles, and orientations and directions expressed in the journal's editorials’ throughout the years under consideration. An interview with Professor José Dias Sobrinho was also used, so as to apprehend the meanings of the editors who have conducted the journal throughout the years, especially because it became evident that the histories of PAIUB and of the journal Avaliação are closely connected, as can be perceived by its editorial line, markedly emancipatory and democratic in its understanding of evaluation.
