According to available data, higher education enrollments multiplied approximately 25 times between 1962 and 2001, intensifying the participation of the private sector. This text introduces an existing data synthesis, the accomplished studies tendencies and highlights the expansion of teacher education programs. It points out some implications in the teaching organization due to the expansion option in evening programs, in isolated teaching establishments with a private administrative nature, that is, an expansion that doesn't favor a research methodology. Even with the current enrollment expansion in the teachers' education programs, the number of graduates is insufficient to meet the demands of the Law 9394/96, particularly in the Sciences area, with accentuated deficits on higher education level teachers with specific formation. Further, the teachers' formation for professional programs reveals itself with minimum offer, evidencing a field that is less valued. To conclude, it discusses the articulation between the teaching expansion and the educational formation improvement.
