The text analyzes attrition and retention rates in the Brazilian educational system, taking as reference the democratization process which occurred in the system since the 1960s. The analysis is the result of a research carried out with the purpose of discussing the problem of attrition in higher education through a diagnosis of its occurrence in the general studies cycle at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). He main focus of the analysis is the understanding of the complexity of the relations which developed in university environment and that may come to be the cause of the phenomenon. This diagnosis was carried out taking into account the socio-economic profile of students and their learning achievements.
