This article tries to analyze the changes which occurred in the Brazilian higher education evaluation system in the last ten years. At the moment the evaluation issue reaches the very core of higher education, and several methods have been presented, like PAIUB (National Institutional Evaluation Program for Brazilian Universities) and SINAES (National Higher Education Evaluation National System), still under discussion. These methods are in direct conflict with the quantitative and ranking notions which govern the National Exam known as "Provão". Although, the newly proposed evaluation system is clearly antagonist to the existing paradigm, the Lula Government remains undecided about which model to choose.
