The following article investigates the loss of identity and the loss of autonomy of the Brazilian university in a neoliberal context. The present study analyses the public policy towards higher education practiced, above all, since the 1990's. Issues such as changes in the concept of "university"; the power loss of the concept of "university autonomy", the acceleration of the privatization process of higher education with the university's insertion within the logic of capital. Along with these changes, the text explores the banalization of university education and the increasing control by the state, by the MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture) and by the funding agencies for advanced research through the "evaluation system." As the end of the text, we offer a few alternatives regarding the present situation.
