The purpose of this article is to analyze the relation between theory and practice based on the construction of an institutional evaluation process developed by UNIMEP - Methodist University of Piracicaba. To accomplish this, a reflection was developed from some essential theoretical orientation on the institutional evaluation debate, such as the relation between evaluation and project, the university's community participation, institutional references, legitimacy and respect to identities. The leading goal of the debate is to show it is possible, considering the reality of private universities, to develop an informing and formative process of institutional evaluation, in view of, on the other hand, the difficulties inherent in this challenge and the complexity of university institutions.
