The text discusses de major effects of globalization on higher education, with special emphasis on the global picture of cross-border higher education and on the discussion of education as a marketable commodity, supranational criteria and multilateral agencies. Last, the text expresses some concerns with regard to the effects of the commodification of higher education in poor countries, such as the  Latin-American countries, especially in view of the fact that higher education may be formally considered a negotiable commodity to be regulated by the GATTS/WTO.
