This study had as its main objective define the major characteristics of the attrition phenomenon in the undergraduate programs of UFF, considering the magnitude of its occurrence, in the last twenty years, the way its was dealt with by the institution and the analysis, in different fields of knowledge, of its possible causes. In order to meet with these objectives, we analyzed the results of a research conducted by the University's Office of Undergraduate Studies. The data gathered by this study were obtained from answers given by 542 undergraduate students who had dropped out of their respective programs and who answered the proposed questions in the liket format. In order to determine the causes of attrition, the answers were classified as individual, as institutional, or as external to the university. The results reveal the other side of the democratization of access discourse and of the concern with the quality of teaching - academic exclusion. The study concludes that there is a need for policies which are more consistent, and presents political and methodological proposals for dealing with the issue at UFF.
