This article discusses historical, sociological and political dimensions university autonomy. The historical dimension summarizes the essential characteristics of university autonomy, since the middle ages, and its changes, focusing on the sources of constraint: the Church, the State, the Party, and the Market. The sociological dimension examines Pierre Bourdieu's concept of field, with the purpose of finding out if the is indeed a university field properly speaking. The political dimension, the vicissitudes of university autonomy in Brazil are presented and discussed in relation to the concepts presented, especially the concepts of substantive autonomy and process autonomy.
