Institutional evaluation gained special interest and importance in Brazil during the last decade due to legal determinations, including the new Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional, which in 1996 established new directives and bases for Brazilian education. With the new law, performance indicators, as well as criteria, parameters and demands of periodical evaluation of institutions and undergraduate programs were linked to accreditation requirements. The competitiveness which resulted from the expansion of higher education, largely caused by the expansion of high school enrollments and by the demands of the labor market, points to the necessity of greater effectiveness and efficiency, producing results in accordance to society's expectations. In this regard, self-evaluation and external evaluation play a strategic role.
