Latin America and Caribbean's (LAC) higher education systems (HES) are undergoing an intense process of change. Among the many challenges faced by the HES of LAC, evaluation and the strengthening of initiatives oriented to quality assurance of higher education institutions, careers and programs gain relevance. This essay presents some thoughts about higher education, auto-evaluation and quality assurance programs, generated during the heat of discussions faced during the construction and implementation of SINAES - actions which have significantly contributed to the accreditation and quality assurance processes of Costa Rican higher education.
