Abstract

D' ALMEIDA, Alfredo Dias; MATALUNA, Mariana Beatriz  and  CATANI, Afrânio Mendes. The Argentinean higher education system under debate. Avaliação (Campinas) [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.04, pp.89-103. ISSN 1414-4077.

This article aims to describe the present Argentinean university system by examining the international and national context on which Ley de Educación Superior (LES) - Higher Education Law -, n. 24.521/95, was elaborated. Also, we proceed to the examination of the main themes that, after its promulgation, are under debate in Argentinean society. This analysis points out that principles such as free instruction, free access and administrative autonomy, that characterize the history of university in that country, were questioned by LES, in the name of "efficiency" and "equity". It is also noticed that such principles imbed the gestation of a project to privatize higher education, something common to all Latin American countries.

Keywords : University System; Argentina; Reform Movements in Higher Education; Menem's Administration.
