Abstract

BRITTO, Luiz Percival Leme. Study Readings by college students: an approximation. Avaliação (Campinas) [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.04, pp.105-126. ISSN 1414-4077.

We intended with this research to characterize study strategies of college students that belong to a first generation of high school education. We investigated study strategies of a group of 354 Pedagogy students and 58 Occupational Therapy students of Universidade de Sorocaba, SP. Following our theoretical approach, based on two analytical axes - the typical written culture expressions and College Education organization -, we supposed that the knowledge of study strategies implies different manners of studying; such difference would correspond to different epistemological approaches, so that students with more familiar background would have more domain of the intellectual actions and a differentiated posture before abstract knowledge. Therefore, we expected to find significant differences in the forms of thinking in operations with formal contents due to the type of school experience and the intellectual education of these students. However, the results of the investigations did not confirm the initial hypothesis. We concluded that the processes by which knowledge is acquired and the writing and reading capacities are related more to forms of hegemonic culture and the possibilities of access to it than to teaching methods and written practices in regular education. In other words, difficulties in using and understanding academic discourse do not come from a generic wiling of reading capacity, or even from the knowledge of formal study procedures; actually, they are related to the form by which people interact with the objects of written culture, in particular with the forms in which the formal knowledge is organized.
