Since the year 2000, Mexican higher education has a program accrediting system that was built upon evaluation schemes dating back to 1990. This article reviews the experience and the impact of current accrediting practices. The authors conclude that several basic aspects, such as the number of agencies and the implications, need to be defined if the current system is to guarantee quality.
