The requirements of modern times point to the need of rethinking educational agencies so they may adapt themselves to contemporary demands. The purpose of this brief study is to reflect upon institutional evaluation processes developed by higher education institutions and their contribution to the achievement of quality in the services rendered. Institutional evaluation, as a management instrument, if well conducted, can detect the positive aspects and those that need to be improved; it must be oriented to knowledge, interpretation, decision-making and transformation of reality. As it aims at building up and improving educational quality, it cannot be imposing or punitive. The quest for quality, based on institutional evaluation as a management instrument for higher education institutions, in articulation with pedagogical planning, is here considered highly positive and must be the result of collective effort and part of the life and culture of the institutions, stimulating the growth and creativity of the individuals and the institution itself.
