This text discusses the meaning of the "intemationalization" of knowledge in the context of globalization, in which education and research are each day losing their main attribute as a universal public right and becoming a private property or a special kind of merchandise. In this scenario the text presents some proposals which are being carried out by multilateral institutions, mainly the World Bank and the World Trade Organization, through the GATTS and TRIPs agreements, as well as by nations or groups of nations, with the creation of agreements such as the Bologna Process, it also points out how private interests are shaping a new culture, legitimating some types of knowledge, affecting public and private universities in regard to the process of production, financing, distribution and legitimation of knowledge, as well as affecting graduate programs, in terms of objectives, contents, length and degrees awarded.
