Abstract

This paper is a comparative study of a few modem tendencies in higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean, with quick glimpses into globalization and its impact in the universities of this region, our analysis has as main purposes: I) discuss the significance of the university reforms in the field of public and private universities and of their repercussions in the evaluation and accreditation processes; 2) draw some possible settings for the evolution of higher education; 3) illuminate the dilemma between a solidarious internationalization, based on the notion of higher education as a public good, and the growing tendency towards the commercial transnationalization through new providers and; 4) offer some conclusions that could contribute to formulating policies in the spirit recommended by UNESCO in the World Conference of Higher Education (CMES, 1998) and in further meetings of this Conference.
