The South Brazilian Network of Researchers in Higher Education (RIES) articulates researchers from nine Gaucho universities and is developing studies about the history. Policies and pedagogical practices of the universities. These studies are part of a research project of RIES which has the purpose of mapping out the scientific production in the field of higher education in the stale of Rio Grande do Sul. In this paper we present the data related lo the dissertations and doctoral theses produced in the Post-graduate Programs in Education at the Gaucho Universities, in the period between 1995 and 2005. The data gave evidence of the movements and the temporal distribution of the productions, as well as the concentration of specific themes related to the research lines of the Programs, their history and the dimension and location of the university. We also perceived influences of the methodological and thematic tendencies of the area, as well as of the public policies of education. The categories have been construed by the Research Group, based on the perseverance of the themes in the dissertations and theses in the area, of education.
