The purpose of this article is to socialize the institutional evaluation experience that took place at the University of Santa Cruz do Sul- UNISC under the SINAES system. We provide some of the principles and guidelines that are central to this system, the innovation they represent and their reception by the Unisc staff. Evidently, the success obtained in the external evaluation by the university - it obtained the highest grade - is due to its good conditions, the maturity of the institution in terms of self-evaluation and the conformity of its historical experience with the principles of SINAES.
