ISSN 1414-4077.

The National Law of Directives (Law n° 9394) extinguished the exclusiveness of the traditional university entrance exam, encouraging the use of new selective processes by the universities. The Federal University of Uberlândia implanted the Alternative Process to College Entrance (PAIES), a three-year screening process, with exams applied at the end of each of the three high school grades. Since 1997, the candidates that reach the best general results in the three evaluations are selected to occupy 25% of the vacancies offered yearly by the institution, entering always in the first semester. The traditional university entrance exam selects the students for the other 75% of the offered places, who enter in both semesters. The purpose of this work was to determine the predictive validity factor of these two selective processes, through the comparison of the academic performance of both groups of students of the Odontology Program of the Federal University of Uberlândia, admitted by the traditional university entrance exam (VESTIBULAR) and by the Alternative Process to College Entrance (PAIES). The subjects of the research were the forty students of the 51 >l class of the Odontology Program, examined during the eight semesters of the program, by analysis of the official grade registers and subjective evaluation of the students through the application of a questionnaire. The data, collected between 2002/2 and 2003/2, were treated statistically and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results allowed the conclusion that the students admitted by the Alternative Process to College Entrance (PAIES) presented best academic performance and best competence of learning during their undergraduate studies, and showed that the PAIES' predictive validity factor is higher than the one of the traditional university entrance exam.
