In times of internal reforms of higher education policies, the Brazilian academic community was surprised by the publication of a national ranking of institutions derived from data by SINAES. The legal internal reform, that does not assume an institutional performance classification, goes against its formative character of self evaluation and self analyzis. If the national ranking of higher education institutions is to become the most visible side of national higher education evaluation, it can also be a subtle menace to the survival of self-evaluation commisions and of institutional self-evaluation.
