This study refers to the field of History of Education in Brazil and was based on the analysis of the research groups that form the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil/CNPq. A bibliometric analysis software was used to identify the characteristics of the research groups. The results obtained in the 2004 census database of the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil/CNPq showed that there are 108 groups and 317 lines of research in History of Education. The main research themes are history of education, history teachers' education and education in specific topics.
