Abstract

The paper reports the results of a survey conducted with the aim of analyzing what are, for graduates of Pedagogy and Medicine, from the State University of Campinas - Unicamp, the contributions of the university education for a performance as a professional-citizen. The research seeks to unravel, from the graduates point of view, the aspects of General Education in the curricula of the courses as in the other experiences offered by the university. The research was based on the importance of having a university education that goes beyond the boundaries of specific vocational and technical training, that is, that extends to one that develops ethical behavior, critical and reflective thinking, enabling for a performance with social responsibility. The sample comprised 22.3% of Medical School graduates and 23.1% of the School of Education. For the graduates of both programs the aspects of General Education that were more experienced were "discussions on major topics" and "studies of of Western culture classics." As for professional practice, over 90% of graduates are working in their training area and have a perception that they act as a professional-citizens. Most graduates (70%) evaluate that this activity is related to the training provided at Unicamp, as being: suitable for professional practices, supported by scientific knowledge; with social vision; based on ethics and human values. All these are elements of general education that allowed for their formation as professional-citizens.
