Abstract

MATIAS, Renata de Castro  and  MARTINELLI, Selma de Cássia. A correlational study between undergraduate students’ social support and self-concept. Avaliação [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.1, pp.15-33. ISSN 1982-5765.  https://doi.org/10.1590/S1414-40772017000100002.

The aim of this study was to assess what the graduates of undergraduate courses think about the social support received and the self-concept. It was used a perception’s scale of social support that was created to comprehend five dimensions of social support ,including among them the material support, supporting information, emotional and social interaction. It was also used a self-concept’s scale that evaluates the personal satisfaction and the self-esteem. Two hundred and thirty four graduates from the areas of exact sciences, social sciences and health answered the scale. The descriptive analysis showed that the aspect about personal satisfaction from the self-concept’s scale was the most well conceptualized by the students. About the aspects of the social support scale, the positive interaction and emotional support were the most well considered factors. The relation among the variables revealed a positive correlation between social support and self-concept. There was no correlation between the self-concept in its dimensions of personal satisfaction and self-esteem with the material support.
