The purpose of the article is to describe the functions and contributions of local universities in the regional innovation process. The strong presence of universities in regions with marked innovation and their interaction with companies has highlighted the importance of analyzing the functions and contributions of universities in the transfer of knowledge, technology and the generation of innovations in the various regions that aspire to the status of innovative regions. The choice for a qualitative research, justified by the interest in analyzing more deeply the variables that permeate the investigated object, avoiding superficialities. Check that, from the original theoretical and analytical framework, that there are two functions and six contributions from universities in the regional innovation process and that region studied, these functions and contributions exist, but they are not very expressive and unequal.
