The present work conducted a survey to capture the perceived importance of motivational factors that influence the participation of public and private Brazilian Higher Education Institutions’ students in institutional assessments, in light of the concept of crowdsourcing. 383 students from three Brazilian states and 25 programs participated in the research. An exploratory factor analysis was carried out, leading to eight statistically relevant motivational factors that appeared in the responses. Then, a comparison was made between the means of the factors based on a parametric test to check if the difference in perception of the motivational factors by students of public institutions and students of private institutions was statistically significant. A content analysis of 93 open responses was also conducted. The motivational factor “relationship / socialization” emerged as the most relevant for private institutions’ students. “Knowledge sharing / altruism” also stood out among students from private and public institutions. The analysis of the open question responses showed that students relate the institutional assessment to an assessment of their lecturers, only, not of the whole institution.
