Abstract

SAEKI, Margarida Juri. Sistemas eletroquímicos, sua eficiência na produção de energia e contribuição na preservação do Meio Ambiente. Ciência educ. [online]. 1996, vol.02, pp.57-66. ISSN 1516-7313.

Electrochemical systems convert the free energy of a fuel, by chemical reaction, directly into electric current without going through a Carnot thermodynamic cycle. Because of this, the efficiency in the energy conversion is almost twice when compared to a heat engine and the emission of pollutant is much lower. The practical use of such systems contributes to saving natural fuel source such as coal, hydrocarbon, uranium, etc. Particularly, the systems named rechargeable cells are very interesting to reduce environmental pollution by cell components. Such cells can be charged by hydroelectric energy as a power source, and is a very promising technology for countries with high potential of hydroelectric power generation like Brazil. Fuel cell is another technology that can be used as electric power generation devices. This technology will be used for example in electric car using methane as fuel.

Keywords : Fuel Cell; Electrochemical Systems; Energy.
