The knowledge of sanitary and environmental problems coming from inadequate disposition of household garbage is important in the development of environmental programs in elementary school education. Nowadays, only 10% to 15% of the municipal administration shows some kind of treatment of solid domestic wastes. The main consequences of this situation are: river contamination and ground water by "chorume", which is a highly contaminated liquid originated from garbage organic mass; fetidness; proliferation of disease carrying insects; health risks to garbage collectors; degradation of urban areas in suburbs, which stimulates the occurence of pronounced erosions and many times turning impractical the construction of houses.
