Abstract

HENNING, Paula Corrêa  and  FERRARO, José Luís Schifino. The political struggles of Environmental Education in Brazilian universities: challenging neoliberal governmentality in the domain of education for sustainable development. Ciência educ. [online]. 2022, vol.28, e22028.  Epub Aug 13, 2022. ISSN 1980-850X.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1516-731320220028.

The article discusses a valuable discourse event in the field of Environmental Education (EE): the establishment of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Through a Foucauldian lens, this study focuses on strategies of neoliberal governance which frame the new educational proposal. Here, we take two paths: the first is a discussion on the emergence of ESD and its capillary networks, which have been strengthened as biopolicies within a neoliberal governmentality; the second addresses the political struggle of Brazilian researchers regarding the advent of ESD and the fading of EE in current public policies. By investing in consumers, neoliberalism now teaches us to consume sustainable development. This conflict does not occur without resistance, which is reflected in the epistemological and political fields. This article addresses the creation of these struggles and tensions.
