This text is a theoretical essay on the nature of the research modality called State-of-the-Art, describing its main characteristics and differences in relation to bibliographical reviews. It argues that there are no plausible arguments for the differentiation between State-of-the-Art and State-of-Knowledge, since the scope of State-of-the-Art is defined as studies dedicated to the analysis of academic and scientific production in a field or area of knowledge. Finally, it explains some basic procedures involved in this type of investigation, and we point out the importance of State-of-the-Art as studies that situate the trends and characteristics of the research produced in a given area.
