Abstract

MELO, Leonardo Wilezelek Soares de  and  OLIVEIRA, Moisés Alves de. A pragmatic reading of Bruno Latour’s work and the implications for Science Education. Ciência educ. [online]. 2023, vol.29, e23037.  Epub Sep 20, 2023. ISSN 1980-850X.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1516-731320230037.

The purpose of this essay is to discuss the relationship between Bruno Latour's work and the concepts associated with pragmatism. We examine the ontological and methodological foundations of these perspectives in order to develop the thesis that the hybrid nature of the Latourian approach has important roots in the pragmatist project for overcoming rationalist and empiricist dichotomies, as well as in the understanding of the methodological relationships between objects and practices in terms of action. More specifically, we emphasize the importance of this relationship in discussions about education, didactics, and science education as part of an influence that goes beyond sporadic citations throughout Bruno Latour's work, establishing itself as a fundamental part of his pragmatic realism and the approaches in Actor-Network Theory and the Investigation of the Modes of Existence.

Keywords : Bruno Latour; Pragmatism; Ontology; Methodology; Philosophy and education; Science education.
