CHIABRANDO, Laura; KENIG, Francisco Sebastian; MONTINO, Marisol e PEREZ, Silvia Margarita. The rules and constraints used to solve a problem in mechanics: The role of mathematics in physics. Ciência educ. [online]. 2024, vol.30, e24033. Epub 06-Set-2024. ISSN 1980-850X. https://doi.org/10.1590/1516-731320240033.
This qualitative investigation explores how engineering students apply physical principles and rules to solve a classical mechanics problem using different strategies. Various semiotic registers in the solutions are examined, which account for interweaving mathematics and physics. The findings demonstrate that difficulties arise when the conceptual scheme goes into mathematical language. According to the analysis, interpreting algebraic results within the physical model is possible if students can mathematically express the physical rules and constraints.
