MATIAS, Hugo e SANTANA, Luís Henrique Alves. Beliefs about the relationship between religion and science: Connotations for a picture of science. Ciência educ. [online]. 2024, vol.30, e24056. Epub 19-Nov-2024. ISSN 1980-850X. https://doi.org/10.1590/1516-731320240056.
This study investigates students' beliefs about science and religion relations (SRR). Extensive literature shows that this variable influences the acceptance of scientific beliefs, such as the theory of evolution. SRR representations were examined about other variables, primarily beliefs and attitudes about the nature of science. The data collection instrument includes items from the Cuestionario de Opiniones sobre Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad (COCTS), plus SRR items (according to Barbour's taxonomy), items on beliefs about the history of SRR, academic training, and socio-demographic information. The data suggest adherence to the views of independence between science and religion, unsophisticated representations of science, and naïve beliefs about SRR. Differences in beliefs were found according to the type of academic training and religious affiliation. The results indicate the influence of beliefs and attitudes about science on representations of SRR, with implications for science education.
