Abstract

SILVA, Erasmo Moises dos Santos  and  ARROIO, Agnaldo. Media literacy in science teacher pre-service programs at the University of São Paulo: What do the syllabus disclose?. Ciência educ. [online]. 2025, vol.31, e25015.  Epub Apr 09, 2025. ISSN 1980-850X.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1516-731320250015.

The training of science teachers must include media literacy, especially when disinformation is gaining strength and impact. This study aims to identify the training proposals for teachers of natural and earth sciences at the undergraduate level at the Universidade de São Paulo, focusing on complementary quantitative aspects - number of syllabus, media studied and bibliography - and qualitative aspects - type of training outlined in the documents. We conducted this documentary study through a thematic analysis of undergraduate syllabus. The results show that although there are discussions and instructions concerning the media, the syllabus predominantly adopt an instrumental approach, focusing on media and technologies used for teaching and learning. At the same time, there are few proposals for training in the historical, political, cultural, social, environmental, and scientific contextualization of the media, an approach otherwise expected of a media literacy proposal in science education.
