Abstract

SETTON, Maria da Graça Jacintho  and  MARTUCCELLI, Danilo. School: between recognition, merit and excellence. Educ. Pesqui. [online]. 2015, vol.41, n.spe, pp.1385-1391. ISSN 1678-4634.  https://doi.org/10.1590/S1517-9702201508148051.

The purpose of this presentation is to evoke the main justifications, theoretical gains and empirical investigations that are based on notions such as excellence, merit and recognition. Educational research has long addressed the goals and symbolic mechanisms that contribute to the maintenance of social inequalities in the educational processes. However, although much needs to be done to minimize structural barriers, contemporary sociology of education is faced with a more diffuse and sometimes consensual problematics of merit and individual excellence. For many, educational opportunities are well under way, and now it would be the individuals’ task to make their own destinies. Malaise in civilization, which has staked its future in school; institutional and personal demands and pressures permeate all educational processes at the cost of mistakes and disappointment. But how can one unveil this challenging fabric? In an attempt to collaborate with the reflections of the area, we have invited some researchers who have accumulated knowledge that concerns the challenges of current education. We are confident that this original material will bring a contribution to those interested in the theme.

Keywords : Schooling; Merit; Excellence; Recognition.
