Abstract

XAVIER FILHA, Constantina. Violence and human rights in research with children. Educ. Pesqui. [online]. 2015, vol.41, n.spe, pp.1569-1584. ISSN 1678-4634.  https://doi.org/10.1590/S1517-9702201508142490.

This article aims to present the paths trodden in research with children in 2012 and 2013 in a public school of Campo Grande city, Mato Grosso do Sul state, as well as the voices of children on issues of violence and human rights. The theoretical framework was gender studies and cultural studies. The methodological assumptions were those of the research on children, using the following strategies: weekly meetings with large groups, meetings with the whole classroom, and meetings with small groups. In the article, we have prioritized the actions of the first stage of the project in meetings with large groups when children produced texts and drawings on the following issues: violence against children; how I take care of my body and how I protect it; hazards for children in and outside home; children’s rights and violence in and outside school. Initially children had few arguments to discuss violence situations that they had witnessed, but gradually found room for thinking about them and for being heard. They realized the fertility of the debates and came to understand that many children are in vulnerable situations and they need to understand their rights in order to protect themselves. Violence and human rights were pressing themes and led us to think that children want to discuss these matters; however, they do not always find room for it, especially in schools.

Keywords : Violence against children; Human rights; Gender.
