This study aim the general performance of students from high school in 2019 from schools in Minas Gerais in the National High School Exam, the ENEM. Based on data provided by the Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research (INEP), descriptive statistics were used, considering the variables school administrative dependency, gender, race, income, parents’ education and grades, in order to relate to the performance of these students according to their socioeconomic profile. Altogether, the scores of 91,540 students from private, federal, state and municipal schools and units of Colégio Tiradentes of the Military Police (CTPM) were recorded. The data showed that the majority of students who took the ENEM 2019 and who completed high school that same year were enrolled in state schools, which were the institutions that presented the lowest averages in all areas of knowledge of the test. The average grade of private schools, in turn, was higher than that of all other institutions in all areas and followed the national standard. The investigation shows how socioeconomic variations contribute to a broader picture through which inequalities are barriers to improving school performance and to the democratization of education in Brazil. The type of school administrative dependency was the most influential variable among those considered in this work.
