Abstract

GALVAO, Kerly Cristina de Oliveira; GONCALVES, Rosiane Maria Lima; TEIXEIRA, Fábio André  and  CORREA, Lays Matias Mazoti. Affirmative actions: a study on the difference in academic performance between quota and nonquota students at UFV-CRP. Educ. Pesqui. [online]. 2023, vol.49, e257324.  Epub July 20, 2023. This work analyzed the results of the implementation of the affirmative action policy, which establishes quotas in the Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFEs), Law 12.711/2012, at the Federal University of Viçosa - Campus Rio Paranaíba (UFV-CRP). Using non-parametric statistical tests, the academic performance of quota students was compared to non-quota students for the period from 2016 to 2020. The data of the 2,585 cases analyzed contain the grades that students obtained in the contest for admission in their undergraduate programs, through the Unified Selection System (SiSU/ MEC), based on the National High School Examination (ENEM); information on academic performance based on the cumulative performance coefficient (CRA) and the number of failures. The results demonstrated that, despite the average admission score (ENEM) of quota students being statistically lower than the average score of non-quota students, there is an evolution after admission, and no statistically significant difference in the means of the cumulative performance coefficient or in the number of failures between the two groups was observed in most undergraduate programs at UFV-CRP. It was evident that affirmative action provides access to groups in socioeconomic vulnerability, without compromising education quality. The results of this study contribute to updating and deepening public debate and the assessment of the so-called Quota Law, which was scheduled to be implemented in 2022.
