Abstract

MACHADO, Fabiana Ferreira; CARDOSO, Nicolas de Oliveira  and  GUILHERME, Alexandre Anselmo. Burnout and engagement in Brazilian public high school teachers. Educ. Pesqui. [online]. 2024, vol.50, e277390.  Epub Oct 20, 2024. ISSN 1678-4634.  https://doi.org/10.1590/s1678-4634202450277390.

The teaching profession is considered to be one of the most stressful, with activities that have repercussions on the physical and mental health of workers, and is characterized as a risky occupation. The concepts of burnout and work engagement have been studied as elements to understand the perception of teachers’ mental health in their work context. The aim of the research was to understand, from the perspective of secondary school teachers, what factors of malaise and well-being are present in the school context. This is a quantitative study, with online collection. The sample consisted of eighty teachers from Brazilian public schools. The study’s main contribution was the unexpected results regarding the variables “having some beliefs” and “area of residence”. Teachers who had some beliefs had significantly higher well-being scores than those who had no beliefs. Teachers who live and work in rural areas had significantly higher well-being scores compared to those who live and work in urban areas. In relation to the scores of the scales used, the averages obtained to assess malaise were considered high, while those for well-being were considered average. The variables reported are considered to be of interest to the scientific community due to the low number or lack of studies investigating them. It is hoped that the results can contribute to the creation of programs, interventions and coping strategies in prevention and health promotion, as well as continuing training.
