This paper aims to contribute to better understand the pedagogical discourse on childhood that circulated in Portugal in the first decades of the 20th century, namely the reception of new pedagogical approaches. Given the pivotal role of printed materials in disseminating and structuring pedagogical knowledge, our analysis focuses on a report produced by Ricardo Rosa y Alberty, a primary school teacher who attended the International Course of Montessori Pedagogy in Barcelona in 1916. The report’s analysis was complemented with the reference to other texts produced by the same author, which had in common the pedagogical perspective of Maria Montessori. Employing a qualitative approach, a content analysis of the texts was conducted. Our findings reveal that the pedagogical knowledge conveyed in Montessori courses was reinterpreted by the author, ending up in losing some “integrity”. There are principles of the method that Alberty appreciates and embraces (the transferred knowledge remains mostly immutable). However, it moves away from some of the teaching processes adopted in elementary education, considering that these are not coherent with the method’s proposal (fundamentally aimed at children of pre-school age). Alberty’s writings offer valuable insights into the diffusion of scientific pedagogy in Portugal, particularly regarding Montessori pedagogy.
