Even though the violence in the schools is not a new fact, due to its worsening it has been object of concern of all who find themselves involved or who are concerned by the problem, especially in the public schools. It is a problem that cannot be analyzed apart from the society in which the school is inserted, but it should be seen as a specific case, that has its particularities. This article aims to bring this subject to the surface, directly relating it with the Brazilian cultural and political inheritance through a historical summary of the development of the educational system. Thus, it tries to understand how the denial to the access to citizenship can make the lack of bond between the person and the society and the school stop one from perceiving oneself as a citizen.
