This research is part of a Master thesis presented to the Program of Masters Degree in Education, of UFSM, included in the ‘Graduation, Knowledge and Professional Development’ research line. The research discusses the contribution of post-graduate programs to university professor education, inferring possible quality indicators for this process. In this text, we present a brief review of the history of the post-graduation in Brazil and of the post-graduate programs in education, as inserted in this context. We point out the different moments of discussions of the “PNPG”s, the creation of INEP and ANPED as marks of this trajectory. The study of these paths allowed us to evidence the main aspects of this history and to comprehend factors that determine the configuration of the current post-graduate programs in Brazil, specially in what concerns the discussions about quality of these programs.
