This article aims at analyzing how informal educational projects, such as environmental education, that seek to improve the quality of life of local communities, can contribute to their involvement in the preservation of Environmental Protected Areas. The article reflects on an experient on environmental education - through the Socio-environmental Intervention Program - Local Agents for Sustainability - that took place in 2007, at the Moinho Rural District, in the municipality of Nazaré Paulista, Cantareira System Environmental Protected Areas, São Paulo. This experient is related research that is being developed in the area with support by the São Paulo State Research Fund (Processes number 03/08432-5, 06/55919-5, 06/61505-9 and 06/60366-5). The purpose of this program was to encourage community participation in their struggle for autonomy in income generation, better quality of life and social-environmental and cultural sustainability. The project took place at the Moinho District and the target population was the community residents, approximately 500 people. It is estimated, however, that 50 people benefited indirectly, the project focused on stimulating community organization and participation as a means to achieve social change.
